Greifswald (dpa/mv) - Two weeks after a life-threatening knife attack in Greifswald, the police honored several women and men for their civil courage. As a police spokeswoman said on Wednesday, the six young passers-by made sure that the suspect was caught on October 24, the case cleared up and the 34-year-old victim saved thanks to comprehensive first aid and quick emergency surgery. The perpetrator stabbed the victim in the neck and fled.
A 26-year-old from Greifswald received an award on Tuesday because he immediately alerted an acquaintance who is an emergency paramedic. The 26-year-old then ran after the perpetrator. Through his description and information, the suspect was able to be caught in the ramparts. The emergency worker came by bike and, together with other helpers, treated the injured person who was bleeding heavily. He managed to stop the bleeding with another passer-by and his jacket. A young couple who sat on a park bench and saw where the perpetrator threw the murder knife gave the police a tip and was also acknowledged.
The alleged perpetrator was taken into custody for attempted manslaughter because there was a risk of absconding. The motive is still unclear, it said. According to video footage, the men, who were both homeless and drunk, had previously gotten into an argument. Rescue workers had to revive the victim at the scene of the crime in front of the train station.
