Jördenstorf (dpa/mv) - A tenant's good sense of smell and light sleep have saved many residents of a prefabricated building in Jördenstorf (Rostock district) from major fire damage. As a police spokesman said on Tuesday, shortly after midnight the 56-year-old woke up all the residents of the 30 apartments in the five-storey building because of the smell of burning in the basement so that they could flee. He also alerted the fire department and police. The fire brigade extinguished the basement fire before it spread further.
The cause of the fire is still unclear, but arson is suspected. Another tenant suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to a clinic. After thorough ventilation, the remaining residents were able to return to their apartments during the night. The amount of the damage is still unclear, it said. In such prefabricated buildings, the basement rooms are connected at the bottom with intermediate doors, so that smoke in the event of a fire does not only flow into a stairwell.
