Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Brussels visit: Cabinet focuses on energy policy

Brussels/Schwerin (dpa/mv) - The state cabinet of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has campaigned for measures against the energy crisis at EU level. The topic of energy security and affordable prices play the greatest role in all on-site appointments, said Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) on Tuesday during the visit of the state cabinet in Brussels. In addition to the short-term capping of energy prices at national level, a reform of the European electricity market is also needed.

According to a cabinet decision, the state government also welcomes proposals from the EU Commission for temporary upper profit limits for electricity producers and a solidarity contribution based on surplus profits. In addition, talks with EU representatives also deal with economic development, farmers' concerns, health care in rural areas, as well as work and social affairs.

Schwesig emphasized how important the EU is for development in the north-east. "Since our federal state came into existence, 26 billion euros have flowed to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in rural areas alone," she said. A further 1.9 billion euros in funding is expected by 2027.
