Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Bundestag petition is directed against the LNG terminal off Rügen

Sellin/Berlin (dpa/mv) - Critics of a facility planned for importing liquefied natural gas off Rügen have started a Bundestag petition. The petition published on Tuesday is directed against the inclusion of Rügen as a location in the LNG Acceleration Act. This is intended to classify the construction project as a priority project and pave the way for a faster approval process.

So far, only Lubmin is provided for in the law as a location in Western Pomerania. The petition can be signed until April 4th.

According to the organizers, the petitioners are Marvin Müller, state chairman of the Jusos Mecklenburg-West Pomerania and member of the Binz municipal council, and Kai Gardeja, tourism director of Binz Bay and board member of the state tourism association.

The LNG terminal directly in front of Rügen is also highly controversial in political Berlin, said Müller. According to Gardeja, it receives many letters from all over Germany on the subject. "Therefore we are very optimistic to reach the quorum of 50,000 votes."

Then the petitioners would have to be heard in a public meeting of the Petitions Committee. A petition on the change.org website against the planned terminal had almost 80,000 supporters by Tuesday afternoon.

According to previous plans, two platforms are to be built in the Baltic Sea off Sellin in the southeast of Rügen, on which floating liquefied natural gas terminals are to be moored. After the officially opened terminal in Lubmin in mid-January, it would be the second in Western Pomerania. The energy company RWE is to implement the project in front of Rügen on behalf of the federal government.
