Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Cabinet deals with the situation of the agricultural economy in MV

Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The state government will deal with the situation in agriculture in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on Tuesday (11 a.m.) at its meeting. After years of low producer prices making life difficult for many farmers in the country, increasing prices for fuel, fertilizer and seeds are now increasingly burdening the farms. Agriculture Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) wants to provide information about the current situation in agriculture after the cabinet meeting.

He is expected to also provide an initial assessment of expected crop yields. After years of low rainfall, the fields in the north-east are also suffering from a lack of water, but the effects seem less dramatic this year than in central or southern Germany. Other topics are likely to be the consequences of the war in Ukraine, future EU agricultural subsidies and the controversial requirements from Brussels for reduced use of fertilizers and pesticides. The plans are viewed very critically by large sections of the peasantry. An agreement on the national implementation of the common European agricultural policy is still pending.
