Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Chief of Police Ebert wants to become a mayor candidate

Rostock (dpa / mv) - The director of the state police office, Michael Ebert, is aiming for a candidacy for the vacant mayoral office in Rostock. Ebert announced this wish and at the same time made it clear that the decision was now up to others, said the deputy chairman of the Rostock FDP district association, Christoph Eisfeld, the German Press Agency. The FDP is talking to several candidates, and the district board will make a recommendation next Monday, which the association will then decide on August 19.

The "Ostsee-Zeitung" and the NDR had previously reported on Ebert's intention. The former head of the Rostock police inspection wanted to stand for the CDU and FDP in the November election. "The political parties and the citizens of the Hanseatic city of Rostock have to decide whether I am a suitable candidate for this responsible post," he told NDR.

On Tuesday, the Greens nominated Claudia Müller, member of the Bundestag and federal government coordinator for maritime economy and tourism. The SPD sends the head of the state building and real estate office, Carmen-Alina Botezatu, into the race for the OB office.

A new mayor will be elected in Rostock on November 13th. Should a runoff election become necessary, this is scheduled for November 27th. The election was necessary because the previous incumbent, Claus Ruhe Madsen, moved to Schleswig-Holstein as Economics Minister in June in the cabinet of Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU).
