Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Christiane Stehle is the new medical director of the university medicine

Rostock (dpa/mv) - Unimedizin Rostock is getting a new medical board a good year after the early separation from CEO Christian Schmidt. On October 1, the anesthetist and business economist Christiane Stehle will take over the post, a spokeswoman for university medicine said on Friday.

The 59-year-old has a wealth of experience: She was Medical Director at the Oldenburg Clinic and Medical Director at the Mitte Clinic of the Hannover Region Clinic. From 2013 to 2019 she headed the clinic management at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein. Stehle is said to come from Rostock and also studied medicine there.

The Unimedizin Rostock, the largest medical facility in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, parted ways prematurely with Christian Schmidt as Medical Director in August 2021. The reason is a loss of trust. Significant problems had accumulated in university medicine, explained the Minister responsible at the time, Bettina Martin (SPD). She wasn't more specific.

Stehle announced that he wants to tackle the current challenges. This included the adequate funding of top-level university care as well as the modernization and future-proofing of university medicine, she explained.

After Schmidt's release, the director of the clinic for hematology, oncology and palliative medicine at Rostock University Medicine, Christian Junghanss, temporarily took over the post. Junghanss will remain director of the clinic for hematology, oncology and palliative care, the spokeswoman said.
