Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Construction delays: Königsstuhl remains accessible for longer

Sassnitz (dpa/mv) - Due to delays in the construction work on the new viewing platform, the Königsstuhl on Rügen will remain accessible to visitors for longer. According to a statement from the national park center on Tuesday, visitors can also enjoy the view from the 118-meter-high rock in July and August. Most recently, the viewing platform should be closed at the end of June.

Work has been underway on a new viewing platform since last year - it is to be suspended from a mast several meters above the chalk cliffs. According to the information, the construction company is behind schedule. Completion will be delayed from autumn until at least the end of the year.

State Environment Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) examined the construction project on Tuesday after the foreign cabinet meeting on Rügen. "It is a one-off that combines the creativity and skill of many planners and trades," he praised. "The framework conditions were and are not easy in many respects." The platform is intended to protect the area from erosion and at the same time continue to allow a view over the chalk cliffs.
