Lubmin (dpa/mv) - The disposal plant for nuclear plants (EWN) in Lubin discovered corrosion damage to stored barrels with radioactive waste during an inspection last Wednesday. The Ministry of the Environment in Schwerin announced on Thursday that rust holes measuring two millimeters in size were discovered on the two containers containing solid and dry evaporator concentrates that were processed in 1999. However, no pollutants escaped.
According to the ministry, the incident was in the lowest category, and the release of radioactive substances had been impossible at all times. "People and the environment were never in danger." The Ministry of the Environment is therefore involved in the evaluation of the finds.
