Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Controversy over planned strong salary increase for district administrators

Schwerin (dpa / mv) - A planned strong salary increase for the six district administrators in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania causes resentment in large parts of the so-called municipal family. On Tuesday, the city and community day criticized the fact that the planned salary increase only affects the district administrators and not the mayors, deputies and other full-time administrative heads.

The NDR reports that according to the plans of the Ministry of the Interior, the district administrators should be given a salary level higher. That makes a plus of around 500 euros per month.

According to the chairman of the MV city and community day, Thomas Beyer, the planned salary increase is justified in the draft regulation with a significantly increased workload due to the corona pandemic, refugee and energy crises. The members of the Association of Towns and Municipalities expressed a great deal of incomprehension and criticism of this initiative, which should apply retroactively to October 1st. Apparently, the state government only knows district administrators as municipal officials, says Beyer.

The mayor of Wismar also raised the question of whether the time for a hefty salary increase was appropriate "while citizens are constantly being asked to save and municipal budgets are facing significant additional expenditure".
