Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Criticism: Backhaus advises associations on swine fever fence

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - After criticism from large nature conservation associations on the swine fever fence on the border between Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Poland, Environment Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) will advise association representatives on Wednesday. The German Environmental Aid, the German Wildlife Foundation, Nabu, the Rewilding Oder Delta association and the WWF had criticized the fence as a deadly trap for wild animals such as deer, deer and wolves. Backhaus wanted to change little, they had complained. The country even built a second row of fences along the Polish border.

The protective fence is intended to prevent wild boar, which could be infected with African swine fever, from getting from Poland to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. African swine fever has been repeatedly detected among wild boar in Poland. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has also had cases since last year - not on the border with Poland, but in the west of the state, in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district.
