Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Cycle path in Müritz National Park closed due to bridge demolition

Waren (dpa/mv) - The most popular cycle path in the Müritz National Park - the path between Schwarzenhof near Waren and Boek (Mecklenburg Lake District) - will be closed for three weeks from November 21st. As the administration of the protected area announced on Wednesday, two old bridges on Lake Specker have to be demolished. They are being replaced by dams that have pipes installed to allow amphibians and small animals to safely migrate between the wetlands. The work should be finished on December 13th.

The trail leads along the east bank of the Müritz through the Specker Horst swamp area, which was a closed state hunting area by East German Prime Minister Willi Stoph (1914-1999) until 1990. Cyclists also like to ride the 80-kilometer circular route around the Müritz via the Specker Horst outside of the season. The buildings of the hunting headquarters were camouflaged as a research facility and demolished after 1990. The 31,000-hectare protected area between the Müritz and Serrahn is the largest national park in inland northern Germany.
