Kamminke/Swinemünde (dpa/mv) - After a dead man was found in the Szczecin Lagoon near Kamminke (Western Pomerania-Greifswald), the police launched a death investigation. This should clarify the cause of death and the exact circumstances of the incident, as a police spokesman said on Wednesday.

The 66-year-old man from neighboring Poland was reported missing by relatives on Tuesday evening. Police and fire brigades searched for the missing person and later found him lifeless in the water in the harbor area of ​​the small border village. According to previous investigations, he is said to have been alone on a boat on the Szczecin Lagoon. So far there has been no evidence of third-party involvement.

On the island of Usedom there is a German part and in the south near Swinemünde (Świnoujście) - the largest city on the island - a Polish part. Kamminke is located directly on the German-Polish border, which people can pass through without interruption. The public prosecutor's office is now examining whether forensic doctors need to clarify the exact cause of death during an autopsy.
