Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Deadline for property tax return starts

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - The clock will also be ticking for property owners in the northeast from Friday: They then have four months to submit their property tax return, as the Schwerin Ministry of Finance announced on Thursday. Around 1.2 million properties are to be revalued as part of the property tax reform. This is a mammoth task for the tax authorities, explained Finance Minister Heiko Geue (SPD).

Owners should submit the declaration electronically to the responsible tax office. In individual cases, the paper form would also work. The electronic transmission takes place via the online portal "Mein Elster" (www.elster.de) and in certain simpler cases via the website of the Federal Ministry of Finance (www.grundsteuererklaerung-fuer-privateigentum.de/).

In addition to the file number received from the tax office, the year of construction of a building, the number of garage or underground parking spaces, the living space per apartment and the standard land value or the yield indicator should be specified. The latter information could be called up in the data portal for the property tax reform (www.geodaten-mv.de/grundsteuerdaten/).
