Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Debate on freedom of expression in the state parliament: AfD stands alone

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - In the opinion of almost all parties in the state parliament in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and in Germany, freedom of expression is guaranteed. In a current hour initiated by the AfD on the subject of "defending freedom of expression - taking civil protests seriously", the largest opposition faction was alone on Thursday with its view that freedom of expression was in danger.

The AfD politician Horst Förster accused the federal and state governments of not taking the concerns of the people who are currently demonstrating every week on Mondays seriously. The government reacted with moralizing phrases and warned according to the motto "If the citizen becomes uncomfortable, then he is certainly a right-wing extremist," said Förster.

This prompted vigorous opposition from the other parliamentary groups and also from Interior Minister Christian Gauge (SPD). Level argued that people's concerns were taken very seriously. The relief packages speak for this.

Everyone can say what they think and that must be guaranteed, said the minister. Any opinion expressed must be taken seriously. But that doesn't mean that the person is necessarily right. One cannot say that an opinion is true because it is expressed at a demonstration and that if a politician takes a different view then he is automatically wrong. "We are in a discourse," emphasized the minister.
