Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Discussion about gas levy: Stadtwerke Schwerin increase price

The gas levy is fixed and will affect many people in MV. In addition, gas prices are rising sharply. The customers of Stadtwerke Schwerin are currently getting mail from their provider.

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - The gas surcharge of 2.4 cents per kilowatt hour from October will hit many consumers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania hard, according to SPD energy politician Falko Beitz. A household with 15,000 kilowatt hours of consumption per year then pays just under one euro per day more, Beitz calculated on Monday. It is important that VAT is not due on the levy. "In the example mentioned, that would be an additional 70 euros per year."

Overall, however, the levy helps to alleviate the price pressure for many customers, said Beitz. "But there is an urgent need for federal support for low-income households that cannot pay the additional 365 euros." It must also be ensured that nobody's gas is turned off in winter if payments are not made. The co-governing left called for targeted relief. The AfD demanded the commissioning of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline and longer operating times for the remaining nuclear power plants in order to lower energy prices.

According to Beitz, the gas surcharge could fall or be eliminated altogether if LNG terminals go online and the gas price will ease as a result. The gas surcharge can be adjusted every three months.

Meanwhile, gas customers of Stadtwerke Schwerin will receive a price increase on October 1, which does not include the gas surcharge. The price per kilowatt hour doubles for most customers of the "Citygas best" tariff by 11.35 cents to 22.71 cents, as the company announced. The basic price remains unchanged.

For an average household with an annual consumption of 20,000 kilowatt hours, the additional costs would be around 190 euros gross per month. This corresponds to an increase of 70 percent. For some customers with older prices that have not been adjusted in the meantime, the increase is correspondingly larger.

For customers with basic services, the price per kilowatt hour will also increase by 11.35 cents to 25.66 cents with the basic price remaining the same. With an average consumption of 2000 kilowatt hours per year, additional monthly costs of around 19 euros gross were incurred, which corresponds to an increase of 45 percent.

The gas surcharge is not yet included in the prices. Stadtwerke Schwerin would pass on both this levy and a storage levy that is under discussion at federal level to its gas customers in full, it said.
