Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: District expands road for company settlements

Pasewalk (dpa/mv) - Due to company settlements in the commercial area on the A20 in Pasewalk (Vorpommern-Greifswald), the road connection is being expanded quickly. As the district announced on Thursday, 2.5 million euros will be invested in the connection to federal highway 104 and thus to the motorway. The old avenue is to be renewed and widened over 1.2 kilometers. Construction is scheduled to start on July 13th. The expansion is a prerequisite for the settlement of the shoe manufacturer Birkenstock, which is considered one of the largest company investments in the Northeast for years.

According to the company, the shoe manufacturer based in Rhineland-Palatinate will invest around 100 million euros to expand production. The construction has already started. The production of sandals with an orthopedic footbed is scheduled to start in the second half of 2023 with 400 to 500 people - a total of 1000 jobs. In addition, a company and warehouse outfitter from Baden-Württemberg is investing around 18 million euros in its northernmost location. This is scheduled to start operations in the second half of 2022.

The industrial park in the structurally weak south of Western Pomerania stood empty for years until the state government pushed ahead with the search for investors a few years ago.
