Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Drese: cooperation important in child protection

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Minister of Social Affairs, Stefanie Drese, has emphasized the importance of working together to protect children. The youth welfare offices of the districts and urban districts carried out around 4,600 procedures to assess child welfare in 2021, said the SPD politician at a specialist day on Monday in Schwerin. This is the highest rate measured since 2012.

However, not every procedure is also based on a determined endangerment of the child's welfare. In almost 30 percent of the cases, an acute or latent threat was identified. Compared to previous years, this rate is at a relatively constant level. In a good 40 percent there was a need for educational help. "These figures show how necessary it is to further strengthen interdisciplinary cooperation in child protection."

The main question is who has what responsibility and when. The coexistence should become a togetherness and ultimately also a for each other for the benefit of the children and young people. People who come into contact with children and young people professionally or on a voluntary basis, as well as facilities and institutions in which children and young people live and stay, are important actors in child protection. The state government is paving the way for a state child protection law.
