Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Drese: New attempt to resolve objections to organ donation

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - The health minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has welcomed the renewed push at federal level for a contradiction solution in organ donation. "At the moment, many donations are not being made because the will of potential donors is not sufficiently documented," said Stefanie Drese (SPD) on Thursday in Schwerin.

In the case of an objection solution, every person would automatically be considered an organ donor if no objection was communicated during their lifetime, as the minister explained. A renewed debate about a reform of the current rules is overdue. Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach (SPD) had described the previous regulation as a failure in view of declining organ donations and called for a new vote in the Bundestag.

Drese clearly supported the demand: "A contradiction solution creates clarity about one's own wishes, relieves relatives in a difficult situation in case of doubt and, above all, helps people who are eagerly waiting for a new organ." For the time leading up to a reform, the minister called on citizens to deal with the issue.
