Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: EU agricultural policy: Farmers wait in vain for details

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - The farmers' association in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has warned of planning chaos in view of the lack of details on the implementation of changes to the EU's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). "The cultivation planning for the next cultivation year, which begins this summer directly after the harvest, is already in full swing," said farmer president Detlef Kurreck on Friday. Farmers currently have to make decisions about crops and seeds.

According to the association, Minister of Agriculture Till Backhaus informed the committees that important specifications are not to be expected before August. Kurreck believes that speeding up the process is hopeless and calls for the CAP innovations to be postponed from 2023 to 2024. "It would be like having to drive your car with a new, undefined traffic regulation without knowing which destination you should reach, who has the right of way and how fast you can drive."
