Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Every eleventh accident death on the roads with a bike

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - The number of traffic accidents in which cyclists were injured is declining in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania - but more children were injured in 2021 than in the previous year. As the State Statistical Office announced on Tuesday on the occasion of Road Safety Day (June 18), a total of 1526 cyclists had an accident on the roads in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 2021. That is 142 fewer than in 2020. 184 of the cyclists injured in accidents were 14 years old or younger last year, 9 more than the year before. Six crashed cyclists succumbed to their injuries in 2021. This means that about every eleventh of the total of 68 road accident fatalities in the north-east was a cyclist.

The action alliance "Mobility Turn Now" has called for action nationwide for the upcoming weekend. There is a demand for better bus and train services across the board and more space for cyclists and pedestrians on the streets. In Berlin, Hanover, Halle, Darmstadt and Frankfurt/Main, among others, local alliances want to use bicycle and foot demonstrations to protest against what they consider to be unnecessary road construction projects. Bicycle rallyes are planned in Darmstadt and Heppenheim. Events in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania cannot be found on the organizers' website.
