Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Examination for further criminal offenses after the refugee home fire

Rostock/Groß Strömkendorf (dpa/mv) - In the case of the destroyed refugee accommodation in Groß Strömkendorf near Wismar, the investigators are examining other offenses by the alleged arsonist. This also includes a cabin fire on the cruise ship "Global Dream" under construction in Wismar, as the police headquarters in Rostock confirmed on Thursday. There is also a suspicion of a sexual offense. The broadcaster Ostseewelle had previously reported.

According to previous information, the 32-year-old firefighter is already an urgent suspect in the case of the refugee accommodation and other fires - including in a wooded area and a carport. In addition, according to the public prosecutor's office in Schwerin, he is suspected of having started 15 other fires since April of this year.

As the public prosecutor stated, the investigations are ongoing: "Only after their completion can a decision be made on sufficient suspicion, which is a prerequisite for indictment," said a spokeswoman.

The thatched former hotel in Groß Strömkendorf was largely burned down in the night of October 19th to 20th. The 14 Ukrainian residents of the accommodation and their three carers were able to escape from the building unharmed. The crime made waves, and Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) and Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) visited the scene of the fire on the same day.
