Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Experts present reports on university medicine

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - A group of experts led by the CEO of the Berlin Charité, Heyo Kroemer, will present a report on the university medical centers in Greifswald and Rostock on Wednesday (10 a.m.) in Schwerin. The commission was set up two years ago. The two university medical centers have repeatedly made the headlines in recent years due to sometimes significant deficits, staff disputes and impending bottlenecks in medical care.

There has also been a committee of inquiry in the state parliament since March. This should clarify whether the state government has adequately equipped the university medicine and whether it has fulfilled its control obligations. Last year, for example, doctors at the clinic in Rostock sent a letter to the state government in which they drew attention to supply problems in the children's clinic and criticized cost-cutting measures. According to Science Minister Bettina Martin (SPD), the two university clinics provide a quarter of the medical services in the northeast.

When the committee of inquiry was set up, Minister Martin emphasized that the state government stood by the university hospitals and wanted to conclude a future pact with them. At the same time, she drew attention to the fact that the financial problems of the clinics were mainly due to the reimbursement system for medical services regulated by the federal government, the DRG case flat rates.

In order to solve the problems and to consolidate the two university medicines, the former finance minister Mathias Brodkorb (SPD) was appointed head of the supervisory board in 2019. In March 2022 he was surprisingly replaced. His successor is the former President of the State Audit Office, Tilmann Schweisfurth.
