Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Extension of the federal program for language day-care centers called for

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the demands for receiving the federal program for special language support in daycare centers are getting louder. After Education Minister Simone Oldenburg (left), the Diakonisches Werk Mecklenburg-Vorpommern also demanded the continuation of the program on Thursday.

The Diakonie state pastor Paul Philipps explained: "The fact that this important program should end in the coming year is, from our point of view, the wrong decision." The head of a language day-care center in Neubrandenburg launched a petition that he supports. The aim is that the Petitions Committee of the Bundestag deals with the topic. Day-care centers with a special need for language support could finance an additional specialist through the federal program.

Minister Oldenburg had previously criticized that the federal government wanted to discontinue the program. According to them, there are around 140 daycare centers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania alone, which will be funded with more than four million euros this year. Oldenburg called for the program to be extended beyond 2022 and consolidated as a permanent federal program.
