Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: FDP rejects European election day as a public holiday

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - After the economy of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the FDP in the Schwerin state parliament also made it clear that it rejects the introduction of another public holiday. "Each new public holiday weakens the economic power of our country by a further 60 million euros. Perhaps the head of the state chancellery will now explain to us how such an additional public holiday should actually be financed," said FDP parliamentary group leader René Domke on Friday in Schwerin.

Like the chambers of industry and commerce before, Domke reacted to statements made by the head of the state chancellery, Patrick Dahlemann. After a visit to Brussels, the SPD politician referred to the EU Parliament's proposals for reforming European electoral law. The majority of parliamentarians had spoken out in favor of holding the European elections uniformly on May 9 and declaring this day a public holiday in all member countries. The supporters hope that this will result in a high turnout and a strengthening of the European idea. European elections take place every five years.

Domke took the debate as an opportunity to renew his criticism of the state government's political priorities. "Even with the most recent introduction of Women's Day as a public holiday, Red-Red showed a lack of sensitivity for our economy, which actually deserved the country's help in a time of crisis," said the opposition politician. Domke warned that instead of "throwing public holidays around", the SPD and the left should implement the "innovative economic policy" announced in the coalition agreement.
