Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: FDP requests expert discussion on refugee accommodation

Schwerin/Upahl (dpa/mv) - After the protests against the planned refugee accommodation in Upahl, the FDP sees a need for action in the country. "The current situation is no longer tenable - the state level must take the problems seriously and act," said domestic policy spokesman David Wulff on Thursday in Schwerin. The parliamentary group therefore requested an expert discussion on the subject in the interior committee of the state parliament.

Politicians must sit down with municipalities and the housing industry to accommodate refugees in the best possible way. "If we simply expect more and more from the municipalities, we shouldn't be surprised that local people take to the streets," said Wulff.

Last Thursday there were riots during a protest against a decision by the Northwest Mecklenburg District Council to accommodate refugees. 120 police officers shielded the meeting from up to 700 demonstrators at the top. According to the police, representatives of the right-wing political spectrum were also on site.
