Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Final sprint on Christmas markets: dealers and customers are satisfied

After the complete failure and demolition of the Christmas markets in the first two years of Corona, organizers are drawing a positive preliminary balance for this year. But inflation is making itself felt.

Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Shortly before the end of many larger Christmas markets in the north-east, the organizers draw a positive balance. If the number of visitors stays that way, you will pick up on the time before Corona, said Arno Teegen from the Schwerin Christmas market. On the weekends, the number of visitors to the market in the city center was definitely in the five-digit range. Consumption was also "surprisingly good," he told the German Press Agency.

Those responsible for the much smaller store in Schwerin Castle were also satisfied. "You can tell that people want to get out again," said Luise Mai from the organization team. Tables and food were reserved every day, and the cultural program also attracted people. As elsewhere, the weekends were the strongest here.

"We are registering a large number of visitors at the weekend," explained Barbara Schimberg from the Neubrandenburg event center with a view of the Weberglockenmarkt there. "The dealers and showmen are satisfied with their business." One is confident that the number of visitors will continue until the end.

The organizers of the largest Christmas market in the north-east in Rostock expected a large number of visitors at the end. Katrin Mau from the wholesale market in Rostock was confident that it would definitely be full again. "We are very satisfied with the number of visitors." A good pre-corona level was reached. "Of course, the money isn't so loose anymore and people compare and look more." Nevertheless, the visitors were happy to buy.

Benny Metzentin from the event team at the Stralsund Christmas market also reports that money is no longer so easy in view of the general increase in costs. Nevertheless: "Our dealers and showmen are all very satisfied." Fears about possible renewed problems because of the corona virus have not been confirmed. And the number of visitors? "I don't know if it's quite as strong now as it was in 2019, but it's good."

At one of the many smaller markets in the north-east on the castle grounds in Ulrichshusen, people are also satisfied: "We were skeptical, it was a risk, since many people tend to keep their money together, but fortunately Christmas is probably the festival of festivals," said a happy Susan Esman. We were pleasantly surprised at the turnout.

Most of the larger Christmas markets in MV end this week before the Christmas holidays. In 2020 the corona pandemic led to a complete failure and in 2021 to a break-up in many places.
