Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Finance Minister Geue recalls the obligation to pay taxes

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, 556,100 property tax returns were submitted to the tax offices on time. As the Ministry of Finance announced on Wednesday in Schwerin, the receipt rate was 77.2 percent. The deadline for submissions, which had been extended in the meantime, expired on Tuesday. Unlike in Bavaria, there will be no further extension in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Finance Minister Heiko Geue (SPD) pointed out that defaulting property owners are still obliged to report the data required for the recalculation of the property tax. "In the coming weeks, everyone who has not yet submitted the declaration will receive a reminder from the tax authorities. If this is ignored, late fees may be charged or the tax bases may be estimated," Geue said, describing the consequences. It is therefore advisable to send the completed declarations to the tax offices as quickly as possible.

According to Geue, all property owners who have submitted their complete property tax return will receive a property tax assessment and a property tax assessment from the tax office. The minister emphasized that this was not associated with a payment request. The amount of property tax will be set by the municipalities at the end of 2024 for 2025. It is an important source of income for cities and communities.

The Federal Constitutional Court had demanded a recalculation because the previous calculations for the value of a property were based on completely outdated data, from 1935 in East Germany and from 1964 in West Germany. Almost 36 million properties nationwide have to be revalued for the recalculation.
