Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: fire with serious injuries: expert examines the case

Malchow (dpa / mv) - After an apartment fire with two seriously injured people in Malchow (Mecklenburg Lake District), a fire expert should find out the exact cause of the fire. As a police spokesman said on Wednesday, the public prosecutor's office has now ordered the use of the expert. It is determined on suspicion of negligent arson. In the fire on Tuesday, the 92-year-old tenant of the apartment was life-threatening and her 62-year-old son was seriously injured.

The woman came to a special clinic in Lübeck by rescue helicopter. Her condition remains critical. The son came to a clinic in Plau am See.

According to initial investigations, an armchair that was standing next to a heated tiled stove in the upper floor apartment of the two-storey house caught fire. According to experts, such fires usually occur when heating up stoves, when the furnace door remains open for fresh air and embers fall out.

The son noticed smoke from the hallway and tried to get into the apartment and save the woman, but was unsuccessful. Only firefighters were able to save the 92-year-old. About 50 firefighters were deployed. The house has two apartments.
