Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: First suppliers in the north-east announce price increases

Schwerin / Neubrandenburg (dpa / mv) - First municipal utilities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are increasing the tariffs for their customers due to increased purchase prices. In Neubrandenburg, the prices per kilowatt hour for electricity, gas and district heating will rise by 100 percent or more as of January 1, depending on the contract, as the municipal utilities announced on Thursday. In addition, the admission prices for the municipal swimming pool will be almost a fifth higher on average.

However, the prices that have now been announced will probably not reach customers in full, but will be cushioned by the federal government's energy price brakes. This is intended to offer 80 percent of the average consumption at a lower fixed price. However, the details are still open.

The supplier's spokesman, Ingo Meyer, made it clear: "Saving energy remains the top priority - not only to make good use of our gas reserves, but also to save money." Nevertheless, he welcomes the planned relief by the federal government.

The situation is similar at the Schwerin energy supplier Wemag. While the majority of electricity customers are already confronted with a price increase of 50 percent compared to the beginning of the year from the beginning of December, this adjustment should apply to everyone from the turn of the year 2023. At this point in time, a price increase for gas customers would also take effect.

With regard to the one-off payments planned for December to support citizens from the federal government, a company spokesman said: "We are now faced with the major task of passing on the relief to our customers within a very tight period of time without delay." The same applies to further relief steps such as electricity, district heating and gas price brakes.
