The politician was quoted as saying in a statement on Wednesday. "The death of Mikhail Gorbachev fills us with deep sadness. We Germans owe a lot to Mikhail Gorbachev."
According to Liskow, these include the end of the Iron Curtain and the reunification of Germany. When the leadership of the GDR was still celebrating the 40th anniversary of the state and believed it was firmly in the saddle, Gorbachev's reforms had long since "introduced the end of the communist dictatorships". The bloodless end of the Cold War is one of the greatest blessings in human history.
Gorbachev died in Moscow on Tuesday evening at the age of 91.
