Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Grabow: Reward for information on perpetrators after firecracker damage

A New Year's Eve banger with a high explosive power caused considerable damage to the town hall of Grabow in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district. The people in the small town with many half-timbered houses are appalled. Firecrackers have been banned in the historic center for a long time.

Grabow (dpa/mv) - After the 300-year-old town hall of Grabow (Ludwigslust-Parchim district) was damaged by a firecracker on New Year's Eve, two citizens of the city offered a reward for information about the perpetrators. Mayor Kathleen Bartels (SPD) said on Monday on NDR that a city representative and an entrepreneur are each providing 500 euros for tips that lead to the arrest of the perpetrator or perpetrators. The Grabow office asked for information on Facebook. According to Bartels, many people were out and about on the market on New Year's Eve. In the comments on Facebook, numerous citizens were concerned about the incident.

According to the mayor, firecrackers have been banned in the historic center of the half-timbered town for many years because of the high risk of fire. The explosion on New Year's Eve shattered the panes in several windows of the town hall. The historic panes of a 300-year-old lantern above the entrance to the town hall also burst through the pressure wave. Bartels spoke of several 10,000 euros in damage. The police had estimated the damage on New Year's Day at around 30,000 euros.

The Schwerin Criminal Police Inspectorate is investigating the cause of an explosives explosion. According to a spokeswoman for the Rostock police headquarters, it is still unclear what kind of firecracker exploded in Grabow. Remains of it have been found. They would be examined in the laboratory, which has not yet been completed. In addition, the first witnesses were heard. So far, there are no indications of the perpetrator or perpetrators.

Mayor Bartels spoke out in favor of a ban on firecrackers in view of the events. She would welcome that in the interests of people, the environment and animals, she said, suggesting public fireworks instead. That saves a bit of money too.
