Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Greens call for expansion of wind energy on land and at sea

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - The Greens parliamentary group in the Schwerin state parliament has asked the state government to designate more areas for wind turbines. "We could see the consequences of the delayed expansion of wind energy in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on Friday from the closure of the Nordex rotor blade factory in Rostock," said climate and energy policy spokesman Hannes Damm in Schwerin on Tuesday.

He referred to both an assessment by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) and the draft law on the "Wind-on-Land Act" passed by the Federal Cabinet in mid-June. According to the ideas of Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens), the federal states should be obliged - depending on wind potential and circumstances - to identify more areas for the construction of wind turbines. A total of 2 percent of Germany's area should be available by 2032 - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is assigned a share of 2.1 percent as a target.

Damm criticized the fact that the state government "still has not recognized this goal as binding". Instead, State Minister of Economics Reinhard Meyer (SPD) is withdrawing from participation processes.
