Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Greifswald has elected a migrant advisory board for the first time

Greifswald (dpa / mv) - In Greifswald, a migrant advisory board has been elected for the first time. As the city announced on Tuesday, 13 candidates were already elected on Sunday. There were 25 applicants. Mayor Stefan Fassbinder (Greens) was quoted as saying that the advisory board enables foreign citizens to participate better in the life of the city and offers the opportunity to help shape it.

The inaugural meeting is scheduled to take place in January. The term of office is five years. Like other advisory boards, the migrant advisory board has an advisory function. According to the city, all foreign residents were eligible to vote, as were naturalized citizens, German nationals with at least one other citizenship, or late resettlers and their family members who had reached the age of 16 and had their main residence in Greifswald for at least three months.

According to the information, around 5,000 foreign citizens with their main residence in the Hanseatic city are currently registered. That is 8.5 percent of the total population.
