Greifswald (dpa/mv) - In view of inflation and rising energy costs, Greifswald students are worried about further burdens that could come their way. Students would be completely alone shortly before winter, criticized Lukas Voigt, chairman of the General Student Committee (AStA) Greifswald on Monday. The relief packages would only benefit Bafög recipients, which are just eleven percent of students in Germany.
In view of rising housing costs and rising food prices, a third of students are already living below the poverty line. In addition, the Studierendenwerk is not sufficiently funded by the Ministry of Science to fulfill legally stipulated tasks - these include the social, economic, health and cultural care of the students. The Studierendenwerk Greifswald was threatened with drastic savings measures, up to and including facility closures.
The supervisory board of the Studierendenwerk recently decided to increase the contribution for students by eight euros. The increase will only alleviate the current deficit in the canteens and cafeterias. Meals in the canteens had already become more expensive in May.
