Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Guest numbers at the Stralsund Zoo at a record level

After the corona restrictions of the past few years, the desire to visit the zoo in Western Pomerania is obviously great. The Stralsund Zoo recorded a record year.

Stralsund (dpa / mv) - For the year 2022, the Stralsund Zoo has recorded one of the highest number of visitors in its existence. The city announced on Friday that almost 164,000 guests welcomed the facility. Only in 1989 was there almost 169,000 more. In a statement, the city spoke of an absolute record year.

The zoo housed more than 1,400 animals and almost 200 species last year. While the number of species has remained largely constant, the number of animals has increased somewhat. According to the city, this is related to the expansion of the stocks of insects, fish and amphibians in the newly renovated South America House.

The first offspring in Stralsund with the rare Asinara dwarf donkeys was mentioned as a highlight. According to earlier information, the dwarf donkey breed of the foal Pepino is threatened with extinction and currently has little more than 100 animals worldwide.

In addition, some construction projects were realized in 2022. In this context, a 200 meter long graffiti gallery was completed - according to earlier information from the city at least one of the longest graffiti of this type in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
