Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Helios Hanseklinikum opens palliative day clinic

Stralsund (dpa / mv) - Terminally ill people with a low life expectancy will be able to go to a clinic in Stralsund during the day and return home in the evenings and at weekends. The local Helios Hanseklinikum has set up a day clinic for palliative care. The hospital announced on Wednesday that it was the first such offer in the Northeast. Ten treatment places have been included in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania hospital plan.

Palliative medicine is about making it possible for the terminally ill to have the best possible quality of life for the remaining time and to prevent unnecessary suffering. Many of those affected find it pleasant not to be in the hospital around the clock. The care in the day clinic is provided by doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists or experts in the field of psychotherapy. According to Helios Klinikum, there are only a handful of palliative day clinics nationwide.
