Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: imprisonment for Corona aid fraud

Neubrandenburg (dpa/mv) - The district court of Neubrandenburg has sentenced a defendant to one year and nine months in prison for seven-fold subsidy fraud with corona aid. The 57-year-old admitted the allegations during the trial on Tuesday, as a spokeswoman for the district court of the German Press Agency said. The sentence was suspended for three years.

In the spring of 2020, the man from Neubrandenburg submitted a number of fictitious applications for aid in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Bavaria, Berlin, Saxony and Saarland, which should bring in a total of around 100,000 euros. Applications in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saarland and Berlin were successful - he received 29,000 euros.

The background to the fraud cases was an economic emergency of the then self-employed man, it said. The man should now pay back the sum of 29,000 euros and also do 60 hours of community work. Prosecutors had asked for a two-year suspended sentence. The verdict is not yet legally binding.
