The mean annual temperature was 10.1 degrees Celsius and thus 1.9 degrees above the average for the years 1961 to 1990, as reported by the German Weather Service (DWD) on Friday.
At the same time, the meteorologists registered 2015 hours of sunshine, which was also significantly more than the 1648 hours that were counted on average from 1961 to 1990. "March provided record sunshine," it said. Rain, on the other hand, was scarce: only 481 liters per square meter fell over the course of the year, compared to 595 liters in the same period.
On July 20, the DWD registered heat records in MV. Boizenburg on the Elbe was at the top with 39.4 degrees Celsius. Even on the coast there were sometimes over 38 degrees. In addition to 2006, the warmest October followed, according to the DWD experts. The crisp frost in the second decade of December hardly changed anything in the overall balance. It was already extremely mild again at Christmas, and temperatures far above what is usual for this time of year are also forecast for New Year's Eve.
The German weather service emphasized that it was a preliminary annual balance. Nationwide, the mean annual temperature was 10.5 degrees Celsius. That was way too warm. The year 2022 was also level with the previous record holder 2018, making it one of the two warmest years since records began in 1881.
