Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Land advertises with new eco-securities for climate investments

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - The state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania wants to encourage companies to invest more in climate projects and has launched a new so-called eco-securities for this purpose. These securities are intended to convert ecosystem services of intact biotopes into monetary values, Environment Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) described the issue on Wednesday in Schwerin.

In addition to the "Heckenscheck" presented now, there are already the "Forest Shares", the "MoorFuture" and the "Orchard Enjoyment Certificate". Their sale enables the creation of new biotopes or their renaturation and maintenance through the associated income, it was said. According to the ministry, they are aimed at companies that can use them to offset their carbon footprint.

The first planting project - a 100 meter long hedge near Grambow - is financed by the energy supplier Wemag, the medical testing laboratory Hygcen and the trading company Edeka Nord. Hygcen Managing Director Sebastian Werner sees the eco-securities as a serious way of getting involved in more biodiversity, not so-called "greenwashing" just for marketing reasons.
