Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Lean piggy banks in MV: World Savings Day on Friday

Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The piggy banks in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are among the leanest in Germany. In 2020, people in the Northeast have put 11.6 percent of their disposable income on hold, the country's statistical office said Thursday ahead of World Savings Day this Friday (October 28). Figures for 2021 are not yet available.

That was a savings of 2495 euros per inhabitant and corresponded to 63.4 percent of what was put aside in the national average. Only in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt was the savings rate in 2020 slightly lower than in MV, as the working group on national accounts of the states calculated. The reason is low income.

Nationwide, the savings rate in 2020 was 16.1 percent. However, due to the high inflation, people can currently save far less on the high edge: According to the Federal Statistical Office, the savings rate in Germany fell to 11.1 percent in the first half of 2022.

World Savings Day has existed since 1925. The aim is to make people aware of how to deal with money and the need for financial provision. Against the background of the current price increases, the Savings Banks are giving advice on saving in everyday life as well as tips for financial investments on World Savings Day - under the heading "Saving electricity, picking mushrooms and buying electronics cheaply".
