Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Learning gaps: Students and retirees help in school classes

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - The state government has extended its program for external substitutes at the schools in MV. For example, student teachers or retired teachers can be used to help close learning gaps caused by corona or to support Ukrainian refugee children, as Minister of Education Simone Oldenburg (left) announced on Monday. The regulation was initially extended until the end of the year.

According to the information provided, 480 external substitutes were deployed at the state’s schools last school year as part of the “Catching up after Corona” program. Another 42 were hired to teach refugee children. The external substitutes are a very good enrichment for school life, Oldenburg summed up. "They relieve the teachers and reduce the loss of lessons through their commitment." Those studying to become teachers could, in coordination with the universities, have their work credited to the practical study periods.
