Schwerin/Lubmin (dpa/mv) - The party leadership of the left in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania sharply criticized the rally on Sunday in Lubmin, in western Pomerania, at which around 3,000 people protested against the current energy policy and for the use of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. The demonstration with right-wing populist speakers and fisticuffs against women from the Ukraine is "a disgrace for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania," according to a statement by the two state chairmen Vanessa Müller and Peter Ritter that was distributed in Schwerin on Monday.
"One of the organizers of the event belongs to the right-wing party dieBasis, one of the speakers was the AfD right-wing extremist (Andreas) Kalbitz. All of this does not seem to bother the majority of the rally participants," the two politicians stated. The majority apparently also accepted that three young Ukrainian women who wanted to demonstrate against Russia's aggression and draw attention to the consequences of the war were pushed away. "It's unbelievable that all this could take place," judged Müller and Ritter.
They complained that the participants had campaigned more for an end to sanctions against Russia than for an end to the war in Ukraine. However, it is an illusion to assume that the opening of Nord Stream 2 will solve the problems of the energy crisis. However, there are also prominent voices within the left calling for an end to the sanctions and for the pipeline to be put into operation. Nord Stream 2 runs from Russia to Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. The gas pipeline has been completed, but after the Russian attack on Ukraine, the federal government ruled out putting the pipeline, which was already filled with gas, into operation.
