Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: LNG plans: Federal Ministry puts high capacity into perspective

Sellin/Berlin (dpa/mv) - The Federal Ministry of Economics has qualified information about the high capacities of a terminal for liquefied natural gas (LNG) planned in Rügen. A ministry spokesman said on Friday in Berlin that the 38 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year are about the maximum capacity of the connection line. In addition, we are still in the middle of the project planning. "Of course there are also a number of changes."

The spokesman went on to say that one of five state-rented regasification vessels is earmarked for the site. On average, these would amount to five billion cubic meters of natural gas entry capacity per year.

The German Environmental Aid criticized what they saw as the "chaos of numbers". The federal government must present reliable figures for the LNG plans. Previously, she had spoken of a completely oversized project with a view to the 38 billion cubic meters.

The number appears in a draft permit from the responsible mining authority in Stralsund. The head of the authority also took up the number on Monday when presenting the plans, but also emphasized that these were still preliminary considerations. The plans envisage the construction of two offshore platforms around 4.5 to 6.5 kilometers off Sellin in the southeast of Rügen, on which floating liquefied natural gas terminals are to be moored. The energy company RWE is to implement the project on behalf of the federal government. After the officially opened terminal in Lubmin in mid-January, it would be the second in Western Pomerania.

The reactions from the state government and local communities ranged from skepticism to rejection because of the feared effects on nature and tourism, which is very important for Rügen.
