Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Mayor election probably on November 13 - Rostock citizenship meets

Rostock (dpa/mv) - November 13 is emerging as the date for the new election of the mayor of Rostock, which has surprisingly become necessary. Before an emergency meeting of the citizenship late Wednesday afternoon (5 p.m.), several parliamentary groups tabled a corresponding amendment.

The city had previously proposed November 6. According to several city representatives, the time for preparing for the election would then be too short. A possible run-off election is now planned for November 27th.

The new election became necessary because the previous mayor, Claus Ruhe Madsen (non-party), surprisingly moved to Schleswig-Holstein as Economics Minister. Shortly before, the city had canceled the Federal Horticultural Show 2025 on the Warnow. Madsen repeatedly cited the consequences of the war in Ukraine and the corona pandemic as reasons. Critics also referred to his leadership style.
