Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Minister of the Interior: Consistently combating violence against women

Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Minister of the Interior Christian level (SPD) has appealed to women and girls to report the perpetrators in the event of violent attacks. Reports and criminal charges could be made at any time of the day or night, for example via the state police's Internet station or in person at the local police station, saidleve on Thursday on the occasion of the International Day against Violence against Women and Girls this Friday.

At the same time, he emphasized that the police and public prosecutor's offices must proceed sensitively in such proceedings. Such acts would of course be consistently pursued by the authorities. In 2021 there were around 1000 female victims of crimes against sexual self-determination in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, almost 100 more than in the previous year. "The trend for 2022 also points to a slight increase," saysleveel.

Justice Minister Jacqueline Bernhardt (left) emphasized that 80 out of 100 victims of domestic violence are women. If the crimes of threats, stalking and coercion in the partnership were considered, the figure would be as high as 89 percent. "We must not let up," said Bernhardt. "It is essential to raise awareness and make the problem visible: we have to get domestic and sexualised violence against women out of the taboo zone."

According to the Ministry of Justice, the number of applications for protection against violence and stalking at the family courts in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has risen from 404 in 2018 to 416 (2021). Likewise, the total number of all convictions for the criminal offenses of sexual assault, sexual coercion and rape (section 177 of the Criminal Code) increased from 19 to 37 in the period 2018 to 2021.
