Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Monument to NSU victims Turgu smeared with paint

Rostock (dpa/mv) - Unknown persons have smeared paint on the memorial to Mehmet Turgut, who was murdered on February 25, 2004 in Rostock by right-wing extremists from the NSU. On both benches of the memorial, illegible writing was written in black and on one bench also in purple, the police said on Tuesday.

Investigations were underway into damage to property that was harmful to the public, and state security is also investigating. However, at first glance there were no indications of a political motive for the graffiti on the lettering, it said.

25-year-old Mehmet Turgut was the fifth victim of the "National Socialist Underground" (NSU). He was shot in a diner. The perpetrators Uwe Mundlos and Uwe Böhnhardt were found dead in a burned-out mobile home on November 4, 2011. Their accomplice Beate Zschäpe was arrested shortly afterwards and brought to justice. She received life imprisonment.

The NSU is held responsible, among other things, for the murder of eight small business owners of Turkish origin and one of Greek origin, as well as a policewoman.
