Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: More bird flu cases after poultry exhibition

Schwerin (dpa / mv) - After a poultry exhibition in Demmin (Mecklenburg Lake District), bird flu was detected in 13 poultry stocks. All current cases are directly or indirectly related to the exhibition the weekend before last, said a spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture on Monday evening in Schwerin. So far, no commercial companies have been affected, only private owners. More than 600 animals have already been killed.

According to the Friedrich-Löffler-Institute (FLI) on the island of Riems, which is responsible for the official confirmations, cases have been detected in the districts of Mecklenburgische Seenplatte, Nordwestmecklenburg, Ludwigslust Parchim, Rostock and Vorpommern-Greifswald.

Agriculture Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) had already expressed concern at the end of last week. He appealed to all 241 participants in the exhibition to take hygiene measures. No animal should leave the stocks, none should be bought. In the event of any abnormalities, the owners should contact the veterinary office immediately.
