Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: MV economic output is growing: different dynamics

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's economic output has grown significantly over the past two decades. From 2000 to 2020, gross domestic product at market prices increased by almost 60 percent from 29.3 to 46.8 billion euros, according to data released by the state's statistical office in Schwerin on Thursday. In the individual regions, the development was quite different.

The district of Ludwigslust-Parchim made the strongest progress: while it contributed 11.0 percent to the state's gross domestic product (GDP) in 2000, it was 11.9 percent 20 years later. In terms of GDP per inhabitant, the region worked its way up from 81.4 to 90.5 percent of the national average.

According to the data, the share of Western Pomerania-Greifswald in the state's economic output grew from 13.0 to 13.3 percent, and that of Western Pomerania-Rügen from 12.3 to 12.5 percent. The district of Rostock was also able to increase its share of the state's GDP - from 12.2 to 12.5 percent. The district of Northwest Mecklenburg rose from 8.2 to 8.3 percent and the Hanseatic city of Rostock from 16.3 to 16.7 percent.

The state capital of Schwerin has lost economic momentum, its share of GDP falling from 8.9 to 8.6 percent. The district of Mecklenburgische Seenplatte even recorded a decline in its share from 18.0 to 16.2 percent.
