Neubrandenburg (dpa/mv) - The city of Neubrandenburg will only illuminate its architectural flagships - the city gates and the concert church - on weekends. This provides for an energy saving concept, as a city spokesman said on Thursday. The measures are to be implemented from mid-August.
For safety reasons, however, it should remain possible for the lighting to be switched on again after dark during events, even on weekdays. In addition, further energy saving potentials in other areas would be examined.
The listed city wall with its gates, towers and ramparts around the center is more than 700 years old and is considered the most important sight in Neubrandenburg. The Marienkirche in the city center is considered an outstanding example of North German brick Gothic. It was already painted by the painter Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) and is very popular as a concert church. With 64,000 inhabitants, the four-gate city is the largest municipality after Rostock and Schwerin in the north-east.
